Grandpa’s Hands

Grandpa’s Hands is a short film and art series that captures a grandfather’s wisdom passed down to a grandson. As Grandpa works his gardens, he’s led to share a few life lessons that are music to his grandson’s ears. This was an opportunity for his grandson to take a moment and receive wisdom.

Oftentimes in life, we don’t slow down to learn from others. Many times the answers are right in front of us. You can travel the world and not realize the answers that are in front of you.

Grandpa’s Hands: A Short Film By Des Grain

Work is what he told me

He told me that no matter what it is

Something simple

You have to put something into it

To get something out of it

He’s 83

Today he told me about my history

He told me his grandad grew up on a plantation in Southampton County

Where my family was from

His hands were callused

I told me he made it to the third grade

From there, he worked to help his family

Grandpa and I never talked much

Until today, the day I listened.
